Google’s Click Traffic Is Dying. Memoket Built Ahead of the Curve.

Reddit's stock dropped 29% in a single day last week. The reason, per their own CEO: Google AI is answering questions instead of sending traffic. We've been preparing for exactly this. Here's how we think about it.

What Just Happened

Google stopped sending clicks. Reddit noticed first.

For years, Reddit was one of Google's favorite sources. Someone would search "best app for X" or "honest review of Y" and Google would send them to a Reddit thread. That traffic was the lifeblood of Reddit's advertising business.

Then Google launched AI Mode. Instead of directing users to Reddit, Google's Gemini reads the Reddit thread and answers the question directly. The click never happens. Reddit's traffic growth stalled. Investors noticed. The stock fell 30% after earnings, and over 40% in two weeks.

Reddit isn't alone. Publishers across the web are modeling 30%+ declines in Google search referral traffic as AI overviews expand. "Google Zero" has become a real term in media circles: the scenario where Google sends you no traffic at all because it answers every question itself.

We want to be direct: this is bad for a lot of good companies and creators who built something real. The structural shift is happening faster than most businesses can adapt, and we don't think the solution is simple. But we do think there's a better bet than waiting it out.

The Bigger Picture

This isn't just a media problem

It's tempting to read the Reddit story as a problem specific to UGC platforms and publishers. It isn't. Any brand that relied on Google search to introduce people to their product is affected.

Think about the classic SEO playbook: write a blog post targeting "best wearable recorder," rank in the top three results, collect clicks from people in-market. That playbook assumed Google would send the curious person to your site. Now, Google's AI reads your blog post, synthesizes an answer, and the person never arrives.

The content still matters. What changed is where the reader encounters it.

Our Strategy

We write for AI overviews, not for click-through rates

When we built Memoket's content strategy, we made a deliberate decision to optimize for GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) instead of traditional SEO. The goal isn't to rank at the top of a search results page. The goal is to be the source an AI cites when someone asks a question our product answers.

The distinction changes almost everything about how you write.

Traditional SEO GEO (what we do)
Optimize for keyword density Write for depth and specificity
Drive clicks to your site Get cited in AI answers
Compete for position 1 in results Become the primary source AI quotes
Generic explainers perform well First-person data and real user stories perform better
Backlinks signal authority Unique, citable facts signal authority

In practice, this means when we publish a blog post about how people use Memoket Gem, we include real survey data, specific user stories, and named use cases. When someone asks an AI assistant "how do people use wearable personal agents," there's a better chance the AI references us than if we'd written a generic "5 reasons to buy a wearable recorder" list post.

We also use use the term consistent terminology which helps AI systems build a stable association between Memoket and that category, rather than treating us as one of many interchangeable products in a fragmented keyword landscape.

Why This Fits Our Product

Gem lives inside the AI ecosystem anyway

There's another reason GEO makes sense for us specifically: Memoket Gem is a product that feeds context into AI. Our users record conversations and pull transcripts into ChatGPT, Claude, and Notion. The product is, by design, a piece of infrastructure for the AI-first workflow.

It would be strange to build a product for the AI era while marketing it with the tools of the Google era.

We're not dismissing search traffic. We still care about it. But we're not building a business that collapses if Google's AI learns to answer every question about wearable recorders without sending a click. We're building a brand that AI systems learn to cite, recommend, and reference.

Reddit built a business on being where Google sent curious people. We're building a brand that AI mentions to curious people directly. That's a different bet. We think it's the right one.
